Captain Tom Carroll presents the GOY Trophy to Brian Heverin (left)

2015 Golfer of the Year

The Golfer of the Year went to Brian Heverin with a GOY score of 140 points. Trevor Darling finished second with 137 points just pipping Anthony Quinn on the same score. Anthony managed to improve his GOY score by 10 points on the final outing at Royal Tara GC. The only significant mover on the day. Full list of placings is featured on the GOY page.

The AGM will take place shortly in the Snug House. A draw will be held on the night for free membership for 2016 and a free drink for those in attendance.

Royal Tara - 14/11/2015

Royal Tara winner Anthony Quinn (left). Capt. Tom Carroll presenting

Our last outing of 2015 took place at Royal Tara GC. Tee off was at 10:30am. Eighteen managed to make it on the day, which included two visitors. Conditions were ugly with the course being described as virtually unplayable due to the amount of rainfall. We persevered however, and Anthony Quinn took the honours with a good score of 37 points given the conditions. In fact, he managed to make a significant leap in terms of his GOY standings with a third place finish. Placings are as follows:

Pos. Name Pts.
1 Anhony Quinn 37
2 Tom Carroll 32
3 John O'Connor 30
4 David Dolan 28
5 Trevor Darling 28
6 Michael Collins 28
7 Jim O'Neill 26
8 James Monaghan 24

The longest drive and nearest the pin winners weren't awarded due the failure of the course to put the usual facilities in place. The golfer of the year standings were still up for grabs, with a few contenders able to affect the outcome. But Brian Heverin managed to hold on to top spot despite a rib injury, as no one was able to improve their score, excepting the days winner, Chippie Quinn who leap frogged into third spot. Congratulations to Brian on his victory.

We retired for afters back in the Snug House were a sing-song session broke out with Richie DeLake (Delea) sporting his quitar. Its now the end of Tom Carroll's reign as captain and we move onto 2016 which will include an historic Society trip to Portugal in October. The AGM will be held in the coming weeks.

Portugal Trip 2016

For all those intending to travel for the Portugal trip in October 2016, please note that the dates have been confirmed as 10/10 - 15/10/2016. A €200 deposit is required by 30/11/2015. Full name and passport details must be forwarded to Captain Tom Carroll by 07/11/2015.

Kildalkey Captain Tom Carroll (right) receives the Ryder Cup from Marcies in 2015

2015 Ryder Cup

The 4th edition of the Annual Ryder Cup event between Kildalkey GS and Marcies (Trim) took place on Saturday 3rd October, 2015 at Rathcore GC. Kildalkey were victorious on this occasion with a rather large margin of victory by a score of 13-5. It is the 3rd time in 3 years that the cup changed hands with neither side having managed to retain it since inception. The only blot on the copy book of the day was that John O'Connor failed to score a single point. We look forward to a renewed challenge in 2016. Refreshments and presentations were held back in the Snug House with thanks to Sean and Jackie for the food.

Our 2015 Captain's Day took place at Knightsbrook Hotel and Golf Resort, Trim, on Saturday 5th September. Tee off was at 12:20pm. Thirty members and six visitors took up the challenge. Conditions were excellent but the greens had been poll forked earlier in the week making for some tricky putting. There was still some good scoring despite this. Anthony "Chippie" Quinn took the honours with a great score of 39 points. Just one short for the 40pts club jersey. Brian Heverin was a close second with 38 points and is heading nicely for possible golfer of the year. Brendan Corrigan snatched third spot with 36 pts.

Here is the full list of honours:

  1. Anthony Quinn
  2. Brian Heverin
  3. Brendan Corrigan
  4. Kevin Allen
  5. Cormac Reilly

We move on to the Turkey Shoot on the 14th November only to be interrupted by the annual Ryder Cup Challange against Marcies, in Rathcore in October.

Concra Wood winner Trevor Darling (left). Capt. Tom Carroll presenting

After overnight torrential rain, the day turned out glorious and the course was in great condition despite the overnight rain. Thirty two made it on the day to take the hilly challenge. Honours went to Trevor Darling with a score of 35 points. Bill Hayes made a comeback securing second spot on a count back with 34 points from Jim O'Neill in third.

Category winners were C1 - T. Carroll (again as he heads towards scratch), C2 - B.Carroll and C3 - M.Blake. The longest drive went to J.Monaghan and M.Lynch was nearest the pin. JOC won the front 9 and new member P.Kelly won the back nine. B.Heverin and M.Lynch shared the 2's. The visitors prize was won by Brendan Mulvany on a count back with a good score of 39 points.

There is a long break until the the next outing in Knightsbrook on 5th September our captain's day. Hope to see ye all then. Don't forget that the trip to Portugal is still on and we have a challenge match in Royal Tara on August 22nd. More anon.

Druids Glen - 14/06/2015

Brian Carroll presents to Druids Glen winner Brian Heverin (right).

Our Druids Glen outing lived up to its billing with glorious sunshine on a great course in fabulous condition on Sunday 14th June. Thirty seven travelled which included 7 visitors. The outing was sponsored by Progressive Plumbing Ltd. and represented by Brian Carroll who presented on the day. All got home dry except for one who took the plunge, and ended up in the river that runs thought it. His story is that "he was pushed" and he shall remain nameless (Richie Delea).

Brian Heverin won the day with 38 points on a count back from Trevor Darling in second spot. David Dolan took third with 36 points. Category winners were C1 - T Carroll (Capt.), C2 - S.Skelly and C3 - T.Collins.

Longest drive went to Cormac Reily with another Cormac, this time Foley nearest the pin. The front 9 went to Thomas Gethin and John O'Connor bagged the back 9. Visitors prize went to Jamie Duignan. There were 3 winners of the 2's club and they were Jamie Duignan, Jody Corrigan and Cormac Foley.

Finally there was a 40 point shirt presentation to Karl Stewart for his performance in Glasson. Captain Tom Carroll gifted the Baby Grow as per pic.

Next outing is to Concra Wood in July.

Glasson GC - 16/05/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to the Glasson GC winner Karl Stewart.

Our third outing of 2015 took us to Glasson GC on the shores of Lough Ree. Thankfully we had a dry day and the course lended itself to some high scoring. Twenty seven made the trip to Glasson with thirteen staying overnight sampling the delights that Athlone had to offer. A good night was had by all ending up with a ballad session in the residents lounge of the Radisson Hotel.

Karl Stewart took the honours with a great score of 40 points. Luckily, a urine sample proved negative. David Dolan took second spot with another good score of 39 followed in third by Kevin Allen with 37 points.

Category winners were C1 - B. Duignan, C2 - S.Kelly and C3 - J.O'Connor. Brian Giles nabbed the longest drive with Des Gray bagging nearest the pin. Front 9 winner was Martin Hickey with Bill Hayes fronting up on the back 9. No visitor prize was awarded.

You will note the theme of this outings prizes from Captain Tom Carroll were centred on watches and clocks. This is not in any way a hint about slow play. Whatsoever. We move onto Druids Glen in 4 weeks time.

The Heritage - 25/04/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to The Heritage winner Stephen Skelly

Our second outing of the season saw a return to The Heritage where the weather was the reverse of last year. Conditions were testing again with the cold wind and driving rain numbing fingers and hands with lumbago suffers almost ceasing up. Things eased on the back 9 with scores reflecting the difference. 35 players took the test on the day which included three visitors.

Stephen Skelly took the spoils with a score of 39 points followed closely by our captain Tom Carroll with 38 points. Brian Heverin took third spot with 35 points. Brian was also presented with his 40 points special edition Society top which he achieved at Headford New last November at the Turkey Shoot. Category winners were C1 - Justin Corrigan, C2 - Trevor Darling and C3 - Ian Kennedy. Jody Corrigan also took the longest drive with playing partner Anthony Quinn bagging nearest the pin.

Front 9 and back 9 winners were Stephen Kelly and Brian Carroll respectively. D. Lenihan won the visitors prize. Those carding 2's was split three ways between James Monaghan, Anthony Quinn and Tom Carroll.

We move on to our overnight outing on 16th May playing in Glasson and residing in Athlone. Please make it known to the committee if you plan on staying asap, as the booking needs prompt confirmation.

Baltray GC Co. Louth - 28/03/2015

Captain Tom Carroll presents to Baltray winner William Monaghan

The first outing of the season proved to be a tough test at Baltray GC. The gale force winds spoilt what would have been pleasant conditions despite the overnight forecast. Control of blown over trolleys not to mention the moving ball on the greens and trying to tee off between gusts proved testing. Thankfully the rain held off until proceedings were over which would really have spoilt the day.

A new winner emerged in the guise of a delighted William Monaghan with a respectable score of 28 given the conditions. John O'Connor took second with Trevor Darling taking third spot. John and Trevor also had 28 points with the 3 spots being decided on a countback. Category winners were C1 - Jim O'neill, C2 - Cormac Reilly and C3 - Karl Stewart. Stephen Kelly won the front nine with Kevin Allen taking the back nine. Michael Collins was the longest driver on the day with John Kearney being nearest the pin. John also won the 2's club. 27 members took the trial on the day with no visitors.

We move on to The Heritage at the end of April.
