AGM Report 2019

Dear members,

Our AGM was held in the Village Inn, Kildalkey on Wednesday 4th December 2019. There were 12 members present. Attendees were as follows:

Tom Carroll, Martin Blake, Peter Kelly, Richie Delea, John O'Connor, Brendan Corrigan, David Dolan, Stephen Skelly, Anthony Quinn, Stephen Kelly, Kieran McGurran who again travelled a way to be with us and Paul Fagan our host.
Apologies received from Michael Collins, Karl Stewart and Brian Heverin.

Secretary Tom Carroll opened the meeting and welcomed all those present to the the 14th KGS AGM no less. He read the minutes of the 2018 AGM. This was adopted having been proposed and seconded by David Dolan and Stephen Skelly respectively. Tom then gave his secretary's report stating that membership was holding steady around the 50 mark with new members joing in 2020. The committee had met 12 times officially through the year with other impromptu meetings being held also, as the need arose, to facilitate the continued smooth running of the society. He thanked the committee members for their assistance through the year.

Our 1st outing was to Seapoint where we had a visitor from New York no less in the guise of the one Peter Caffrey. Tom outlined the season's outing venues and winners and congratulated them all. He thanked Emma and Paul Fagan from the Village Inn for looking after us during the year. Tom also thanked our sponsors for 2018 for their continued support and they were:

  • The Village Inn
  • Progressive Plumbing - Tom & Brian Carroll
  • Arch Plumbing & Heating - Cormac Reilly
  • Harmon Oil
  • Athboy Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic

Tom reported that our quiz night worked out very well with special thanks to our host Emma Fagan who was the best score keeper we ever had. Tom then outlined the venues for the coming 2020 season and they are as follows:

Date Venue Tee Time
28th March Mt. Juliet 12:30
25th April Seapoint 10:00
23rd May Powerscourt West 11:00
20th June Slieve Russell 11:00
18th July Druids Glen - Presidents Cup 12:00
15th August Palmerstown Stud 11:00
19th September Headfort - Captains 11:00
November TBA - Turkey Shoot TBA

Our third trip to Portugal will take place from 5th - 10th October 2020 with 28 making the trip this time. A big thanks to John O'Connor and Peter Kelly for their assistance in getting this up and running.

Next up was our treasurers report given by our treasurer Peter Kelly. Peter outlined that the society's finances were in a healthy position. €400 had been donated from the proceeds of the quiz to the Trim Resource Centre. After all deposits had been paid for the 2020 season, there was a surplus remaining which Peter wished should be distributed back to the members. Peter proposed that the outing fees shoud be reduced from €50 per outing to €40 per outing for as many outings this season as possible. This was adopted unanimously.

Outgoing captain John O'Connor then addressed the meeting. He said he had really enjoyed the year. He also thanked our sponsors and congratulated all the winners during the year. He thanked our secretary Tom Carroll for his assistance and said he wouldn't like to see the phone bill. He also thanked Richie and Peter and indeed all the committee members for their help through the 2019 season. He now looks forward to his many future years playing with the society. Stephen Skelly spoke and thanked John for his captaincy and said that he had enjoyed John's year.

Next up was the election of a committee for the 2020 season. There were no nominations for any posts. The outing committee were happy to continue to serve in their current positions. This was put to the AGM and adopted and the committee will continue to serve for 2020.

There were 3 motions up for discussion. The first motion was proposed by Kieran McGurran and seconded by John O'Connor. The proposal was to change the calculation of the GOY from its current score based system to a points based system. This would lead to a fairer reflection of a players performance during the year as opposed to someone who happens to post a good score on an ad hoc basis. The motion was adopted with a show of hands. While Kieran had mentioned in his proposal a points system starting with 12 points to the winner, then 10, 8, 7 down to 1 etc. Richie Delea expressed concern that this could lead to a lop-sided GOY table with the possibility that many members may not score any points at all and the table would look bare at the lower half. Richie proposed to Kieran if he would be happy for the committee to meet early in 2020 to come up with a points based system for 2020 and beyond. Kieran was happy with this.

The 2nd motion was proposed by Peter Kelly and seconded by John O'Connor. The motion proposed was that given that the society has upwards of 50 members, that the society appoint a vice-captain. This motion was adopted unanimously with a show of hands.

Motion 3 was proposed by Tom Carroll and seconded by Peter Kelly. That the society can appoint non committee members to help on society outing days with cash handling and other duties where there are insufficient committee members available on the day. This was also adopted unanimously with a show of hands. It was also mentioned from the floor that the committee instruct its members to hand in their score cards immediately on completion of their round and not after showers etc.

Next up was the draw for free membership for 2020 from those present at the AGM. Tom Carroll was picked out but as he had already won free membership at our Quiz night raffle, Stephen Skelly was next to be drawn out.

Next up was the appointment of our captain for 2020. John O'Connor nominated Anthony "Chippy" Quinn, seconded by Peter Kelly as our new Captain. Chippy was welcomed by the AGM. Anthony said he was honoured to accept the captaincy outlining he has been a member of the society for 10 years now and that we had a great bunch of lads in the society.
Chippy now becomes a member of the committee.

Under AOB Stephen Skelly asked that the society change how we advertise our Quiz Nights going forward. He said a lot were under the misimpression that we were raising funds for the society and not for charity. He suggested that the wording used in advertising the quiz should be along the lines of KGS are hosting a quiz night in support of or in aid of the chosen charity. This was accepted by the AGM

Still under AOB, Stephen Kelly enquired as to what % of members had won prizes during the year. He felt that it was getting a bit too serious and if the handicap system was working as designed. He also thanked the committee on behalf of the ordinary members for the work done.

As there was no further business Tom wrapped up the AGM and said to see us all in Mt. Juliet.

Many thanks,

Tom Carroll
Secretary
